2025 CAS Iva M. Turner Visual Art Scholarship Awards

2025 Scholarship Awards WINNERS

Lauren Garcellano

College for Creative Studies
Detroit, Michigan

  • Lauren Garcellano

    FIRST PLACE $750

Lauren Garcellano is an artist and illustrator who combines her love of nature, art, and education.

She creates art with a purpose—mainly to help people learn about the natural world. She believes illustration can explain science in a way that photos or words alone cannot. Her goal is to make science easier to understand and more inclusive by avoiding complicated language. She thinks understanding the Earth is key to making smart choices to protect it.

  • Lauren is studying visual arts with a focus on illustration, aiming to grow her skills in natural science illustration. Through classes in studio art, art history, and visual culture, she’s making the most of her university’s learning and networking opportunities. Surrounded by professionals and peers, she’s building a solid foundation for her future career. Her goals include creating a portfolio that blends scientific accuracy with creativity, connecting with both science and art communities, and earning a certificate in Scientific Illustration after graduation.

  • Lauren's interest in art began in high school, where she was actively involved in the art program. In her senior year, she designed posters and sets for school plays, which turned her hobby into a true passion. Encouraged by her art teachers, she decided to pursue art school and discovered a love for natural science illustration.

She applied for this scholarship to support her education, connect with other artists, and ease the financial burden of attending a private university after years of private schooling. She is dedicated to using her art to inspire and educate future generations.

Arlo Krino

College for Creative Studies
Detroit, Michigan

  • Arlo Krino

    TANDEM PRIZE $500

Arlo Krino started studying animation at North Central Michigan College. In fall 2025, he plans to transfer to the College of Creative Studies to grow as an illustrator and work toward becoming an art director in the entertainment industry.

His art focuses on two main themes: emotional stories told through abstract, melancholic figures, and original character design for group projects. He’s led card art for a board game and created illustrations for a podcast he co-hosts with other artists. AK enjoys teamwork and brings a fun, creative energy to projects that aim to engage and entertain.

  • Arlos’s main goal as an artist is to inspire others through his work. If even one person feels seen or motivated to pursue their own creativity because of what he creates, he sees that as a success. He's been especially inspired by projects like Across the Spider-Verse and Arcane, which have pushed him to follow a similar path and give back to the creative world that shaped him.

To reach roles like art director, character designer, or creative lead, he knows he needs to attend art school. Since it's expensive, Arlo has been actively applying for scholarships to help make it happen.

  • THANK YOU LETTER FROM ARLO

Dear Creative Art Society and Donors,
I am honored to have been chosen for this Scholarship. On my behalf and that of my family, I would like to formally thank you for your support and the opportunities you have helped to provide …

Lauren Hinzmann

College of Creative Studies
Detroit, Michigan

  • Lauren Hinzmann

    TANDEM PRIZE $500

From a young age, Lauren Hinzmann has loved both creativity and mechanics—sketching ideas and taking things apart to see how they work. Whether she was drawing inventions in class or tinkering with old electronics, she was always switching between imagination and logic.

Studying Product Design is a natural next step. It lets her combine her interests in art and engineering. Through this program, she wants to grow her skills in design thinking, problem-solving, prototyping, and visual communication, while learning to create designs that make a real difference

  • Lauren’s goal is to become an industrial designer, creating sustainable, people-focused products like assistive tech, home items, or wearable gear. She’s especially passionate about using design to spark social change.

Her path to this major wasn’t direct. With a background in robotics and a love for building, she first thought engineering was the right fit. But she felt something was missing—creativity. A conversation with a College of Creative Studies alum introduced her to Product Design, a field that blends creativity, engineering, business, and materials. From that moment, it all made sense.

  • Lauren is deeply committed to a Product Design degree. However, the major requires specialized tools, materials, software, and often extra studio time, which can be expensive.

She writes about the importance of the CAS scholarship, “More than anything, the scholarship support affirms that a future at the intersection of art and engineering is not only possible but also powerful.” Lauren says she is ready to keep learning, building, and creating.

This Year’s CAS Scholarship Judge: Gladys Drummonds

Gladys Drummonds’ artistic journey began in childhood, sparked by a natural talent and deep love for creativity. Over the last 60 years, she has continued to nurture this passion, becoming a primarily self-taught artist specializing in oil painting, watercolor, and acrylics.

After earning her degree in Elementary Education in 1965, Gladys began teaching art as part of her teaching certification—unknowingly planting the seeds for a lifelong dedication to the arts, both as a creator and a mentor.

While self-taught in many ways, Gladys has continued to expand her skills and knowledge by taking numerous classes from both local and nationally known artists, exploring a wide range of techniques and mediums. Her openness to learning reflects her belief that art is a lifelong journey.

Several of her paintings have been acquired by the River Raisin National Battlefield Park in Monroe, Michigan, and will be showcased in its grand reopening gala on June 20, 2025.

Gladys is also an active member of the Magic Brush in Monroe and the longest-standing member and past president of the Monroe Art League, where her work has been featured in many exhibits and juried shows. Her art has been sold at local art shows and displayed at spot shows in restaurants and businesses across Monroe and the surrounding areas. She currently shares her passion through teaching watercolor art classes through the Monroe Art League at the United Way in Monroe and the Frenchtown Center for Active Adults - continuing to inspire artists of all ages.

Thank you, Gladys

CAS would like to acknowledge Gladys Drummonds with a huge thank you for serving as a judge for our annual CAS scholarship competition. As a lifelong artist and mentor, her insight, passion, and artistic eye brought incredible value to the selection process.

Both students and fellow artists deeply appreciate the time and care she shared. Her dedication to nurturing creativity and supporting emerging talent continues to inspire us all.

Thank you, Gladys, for helping shape the next generation of artists!

7. Photographing Your Artwork

Camera raphael-lovaski.jpg

For free-hanging artwork
Hang your artwork on the wall. Light your work properly

  • If you are shooting your work indoors, do so in a room with plenty of windows and natural light.

  • Adjust your camera and settings. If your art piece is flat, try to photograph the entire art piece. Be sure no outside edges are exposed in the photograph.

  • Edit your photos to perfection and save them as 2 MB jpeg files.

    For free-standing artwork
A single light is often all you need, which makes photographing your work even easier.

  • Set up your light stand and angle the light straight down.

  • Position the light so it is directly above the subject. This will create a nice shadow under the bottom edge and will help ground the object.

  • Edit and crop your photos to perfection and save them as 2 MB jpeg files.
